The Guv'nor

The Marshall The Guv'nor Mk1 is a legendary overdrive/distortion pedal, famous for delivering the iconic Marshall 'crunch' in a compact format. Known for its versatility and warm, natural overdrive, it’s favored by rock guitarists for its dynamic response and powerful EQ. It was designed by Marshall in 1988 to capture the sound of a cranked JCM800-style Marshall amp in a pedal. Unlike many overdrives of the era, it uses multiple op-amp gain stages and an active 3-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble), making it much closer to a preamp than a typical overdrive pedal.
